Armagh City Radio was the 2019 brainchild of one Armagh City radio producer and presenter - with a vision to build a station for one of the only cities in Europe not to have one. The station was initially planned and designed as a completely automated broadcast service with the tagline 'The Music Of Your Life' pointing mainly towards the chart artists and music that you would have grown up with.
Alongside the development of the station came one of the world's greatest pandemics in 2020 - causing a slight delay in relation to resources and development, however, testing did eventually begin and it was during this period that other seasoned radio presenters would show a desire to become involved to present various 'live' shows on the finished product. This would have the consequence of turning one mans potential hobby into a larger plan.
A music library was formed, a station jingle package was created, a website designed and a playout software system was selected and populated. Many phone calls were made, lots of fiddling was fiddled with the sound processing and a lot of late nights requiring a lot caffeine would continue along with all the other background work until the end of January 2021.
Testing was completed during the second week in February 2021, by then, Jimmy Leavy would be joined by fellow presenters Francie Quinn, Brian James, James Black, Marty Conor. Final touches were completed with the initial plan being one 'live' show each evening.
At 7:03pm local time on Friday the 19th February 2021 Armagh City Radio commenced 'live' broadcasting with Jimmy Leavy playing 'Henry Lee Summer - Hands On The Radio'. On that first evening Jimmy would be followed live on-air by Marty Conor and then Francie Quinn.
Since that initial broadcast the presenter line-up has increased with the addition of presenters JP McCusker, Hedley Maginnis, Fabian Murphy, Mark Stafford, Gill Hardiker, and Davy Simms. 'Live' shows currently air every weekday evening from 8.00pm, with 2 shows per evening. Weekend broadcasting begins at 9.00am and continues until Midnight (GMT).
With many genre's and styles being catered for, the station music library is constantly updated focusing on the best of today and yesterday's greatest hits, accompanied by forgotten favourites and curated album tracks making up 'The Music Of Your Life'.
