🏏 100 Cap
Better late than never as the family of the late great Lloyd Armstrong are presented with the special Armagh Cricket Club cap for players who made more than 100 appearances for the club by Armagh Cricket Club Chairman Gareth McCarter.
Lloyd Armstrong played for Armagh between 1946 and 1954 and it would be an injustice to just call him an outstanding cricketer as he was a magnificent all-round sportsman, also representing the Ireland international football team in the years before the IFA and FAI split as well as the Ireland team in 11 matches before his untimely passing in 1959 aged just 44.
His impressive Armagh record reads as 109 games, 2777 runs at an average of 28 and 323 wickets at an average of 11.
👆 Pictured is Past President & Past Captain Norman Graham, Past President & Past Captain George Elliott, daughter of the late Lloyd Armstrong Michelle Button-Stephens, Chairperson & Past Captain Gareth McCarter, daughter of the late Lloyd Armstrong Helene Armstrong, daughter of the late Lloyd Armstrong Donna Armstrong, Margaret Elliott and Eleanor Graham.

Nowadays It’s quite rare to see third XI teams play away from home mid week in September. However a combination of the good weather and a team that would play all year round, meant that Armagh Thirds played at Gibson Park last night against Cregagh. It turned out a fairly one sided affair as Armagh ran out victors by 61 runs. The hero of the night was fast bowler Matthew Wilson who recorded his first five wicket haul, his personal best bowling and every bowlers dream a HAT TRICK! Davy Bullick was the man positioned at gully for wicket number 3 who helped make dreams come true.

A rewind Wednesday to August 2013 and a famous 9 wicket victory for Armagh III’s against CIYMS IV. Undefeated Fifties for opening batsman Ryan McCarter and number 3 batsman Keith Wilson. Unlike 2023, that year was a glorious Summer with runs in abundance on hard pitches.

Great to see some cricket on the mall last night after the recent inclement weekend weather. The Fourth XI were the team in action and recorded a fine nine wicket win over Saintfield thirds as they remain unbeaten in 2023. The visitors were restricted to 84 in their allotted 20 overs, Matthew Wilson and Billy Wilson led the way with two wickets a piece, Josh Wilson was the most economical with 1-10 from his 4 overs and Noah Archer enjoyed the moment when he took his first senior wicket. Keith Wilson and James Hazelton were the other wicket takers. In reply the hosts polished off the runs in quick fashion as James Scott rolled back the years with some fine hitting as he and Adam Wilson both finished on 31 not out.

🏏 Annual Friendly
Always brilliant to welcome our friends from St Marks Armagh and The Mall Presbyterian Church for their Annual game.
Fair to say that St Marks were a crack outfit who won well on the night. Extra training needed before next years game!
But cricket at Armagh is all about fun, friendship and giving it a go.

No luck for any of the Armagh teams today.
Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and acknowledge that someone was just too good and unfortunately for us James Kennedy of Ballymena was today. 201not out in a 50 over game is incredible batting.
The 2nds were beaten at Muckamore and the 3rd XI were pipped by Cregagh.
Tomorrow the 1st XI are at Belmont for the T20 trophy semi final (at 11.00am) while the 4th XI host Saintfield at the Mall.

🏏 Results - U11s Update
Morning everybody... bad luck for the U11s last night at Waringstown.
Unfortunately, Armagh were on the wrong side of the result this evening against a very good Waringstown. The score read 186 played 175 but it doesn't tell the whole story of how close Armagh game to winning this exciting game... having taken a wicket and with 2 balls, we were a run behind... so close.
The boys who played tonight will no doubt be disappointed however, once they've had some time to reflect, I'm sure they will all recognise what a good game each of them played - every single person contributed and all should be incredibly proud of their performances.
As always, plenty to work on... but for now, a big well done to all. It’ll come!
How amazing do the boys in blue look here! 👇

🏏 Memories / Presentation / Thank You
Memories of the late Leslie Spearman - one of Armagh Cricket Club's past-masters, are guaranteed to live on following the presentation of two significant gifts by his daughter, Jane (now Johnston).
Friday morning saw her present the city’s cricket club with a plaque-bearing summer seat and a trophy named after her father.
Hereafter the Leslie Spearman Cup will be presented annually to the club's Best Under 11 Player.
And there will be a third reminder in February 2024 when a memorial tree is planted at The Mall where, for two decades, he excelled.
As a Primatial city native, he ticked every box, both as an Armachian and a cricketer. Having been born in Armagh, he also died here on April 9 past, aged 89. An Armagh CC social media message posted at the time described him as having been “one of our greatest ever”.
After captaining the Royal School, Leslie went on play for Armagh from 1950 to 1969, with the pinnacle of that 19-year period of magnificent service having been his season as skipper in 1957.
An all-rounder who made 238 senior appearances, he excelled with both bat and ball.
His highly impressive statistics show him as having scored 6,005 runs in 233 innings - an average of 28.3 – with his highest score having been an innings of 140.
His exploits with the ball were no less spectacular, witnessed by 434 wickets at an average of fractionally over 13 per scalp.
Whether judged by past or present standards, or expectations, those are exceptional statistics.
As an Armagh centurion – 100 or more 1st XI appearances – he was also a member of the ‘100 Club’.
Armagh CC stalwart Norman Graham – himself a past-captain of the Royal School who also went on to skipper the city’s seniors (1962 in his case) and another of the ‘100 Club’ members – told the Gazette, “Leslie was a wonderful cricketer, so we’re delighted to have these beautiful gifts by which to remember him. Having played such an important part in our history, it’s great that he is to be remembered this way.”
Club chairman Gareth McCarter agreed. He told the Gazette, “It’s a lovely gesture by the Spearman family to remember their late father in this way and we really appreciate Jane’s generosity in coming here this morning to formally present this trophy and this bench to us.
“Leslie was a legend here as his statistics confirm; that’s why he is still remembered so many years on from when he last played for us.
“As well as Armagh, he’s a legend in Mid Ulster cricket as a whole, which is why we’re so proud to be able to honour his name with these permanent memorials.
“He was so involved in junior cricket for such a long time that as well as his skill as a player he is remembered for having introduced so many young people to the game.
“That being the case, having a Player of the Year trophy for an Under 11s’ player is something we and the family felt was particularly appropriate.”
Leslie’s daughter Jane said, “He used to tell us about having played cricket here when he was a young fella and that obviously was something he really enjoyed, so it’s just nice to have his name remembered.”
Highlighting the fact that the new cup named after her father will go to an Under 11s’ player each year, Jane continued, “He was a school principal, so he taught P7 – how to play cricket as well as everything else.
“And people I went to school with – my generation – have told me what an inspiration he was to them. Some of them are still playing cricket, so it’s nice to know that he encouraged them to start something they’re still enjoying.
“I’m a Johnston now, but hopefully these things named after him will mean that the name Spearman lives on and isn't forgotten.”
With a cup and a bench named in his honour already in place, a tree to come in February and those remarkable statistics he achieved, take it as given that the name Leslie Spearman will continue to be remembered for a very long time to come.
Story borrowed from the Gazette. Thanks to them for their help with telling this story.

🏏 Remembering
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the untimely passing or our dear friend, highly respected player and committee member Andrew Walbran.
Andrew epitomised all that was good about the game of cricket. We as a club were blessed to have him in our ranks, from his days as a stylish 1st XI batsman to his days as an extremely successful and shrewd 2nd XI swing bowler, captain and youth coach.
At the end of last season Andrew’s daughter, Simone, attended a presentation at the club and collected a cap on behalf of her late father, for playing more than 100 games for the first XI. He played 139 games in total. The rapturous applause in honour of Andy that evening marked the esteem he was held in and will live long in the memory of those who were in attendance.
Andrew was a class act to anyone who knew him and were lucky enough to have played cricket with him. We continue to remember him with great fondness and think of all the many good times in his company. Always remembered never forgotten.
